>> What are Fiber Optic Adapters?
Fiber optic adapters also referred to as mating sleeves, come in a variety of configurations to meet almost any application. The most common constructions are standard, hybrid, and bare fiber adapters.

>> Fiber Optic Adapter Mounting Types:
Fiber Optic Adapters may also be classified by how they attach to a bulkhead plate, including flanges, nuts or screws. Look at the chart below.
>> Fiber Adapter Sleeve Material Types:
The split-sleeve within the center of each adapter is the critical component in the fiber alignment.
1) Phosphor Bronze sleeves are best for multimode applications since they allow flexing and can induce loss in singlemode applications.
2) Adapters with ceramic sleeves are designed for primarily singlemode applications due to their tight alignment tolerances but can be used in multimode applications without issue.
3) Hybrid adapters that mate standard size connectors (SC, ST, FC) to small form connectors (LC, MU) are usually designed specifically for either singlemode or multimode applications due to the use of a small piece of fiber optic glass to make the connection.
