Wilcom F6121R Ribbon Fiber Identifier

Wilcom Part No.: F6121R

  • $ 2,840.00 or

The Wilcom Model F6121R Optical Ribbon Fiber Identifier identifies optical fibers by detecting the optical signals being transmitted through a single-mode or multimode ribbon fiber (jacketed or not jacketed) and 3mm cable.

It operates by inserting ribbon fiber into the top of the unit which performs a macro-bend on the fiber. This bending technique allows the unit to detect the presence of light and the direction of light.

WILCOM F6121R OPTICAL FIBER IDENTIFIER RIBBON, NEW The Wilcom Model F6121R Ribbon Fiber Identifier is a lightweight, rugged, easy-to-use installation and maintenance instrument designed for fast, accurate identification and traffic testing of optical signals without cutting the fiber cable or interrupting service.

By utilizing local detection technology (nondestructive macro-bend detection), this unit is ideal for use during routine maintenance and line modification, and can be used to locate a particular fiber line, non-obtrusively identify live fibers, and determine whether traffic is present. The Ribbon Fiber Identifier detects low frequency tones at 270 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz.

When traffic is present on the fiber under test, an audible tone can be heard as well as the traffic direction which is indicated by LEDs illuminating on the probe. During installations, maintenance, rerouting, or restorations it is often necessary to isolate a specific fiber without disrupting service. A light source such as Wilcom's Model FS1316 used in conjunction with the Ribbon Fiber Identifier can make the job a lot easier.

The Ribbon Fiber Identifier includes three easy to use field changeable adapter heads. Two adapter heads are dedicated to ribbon fiber making the unit ideal for verifying signal presence or absence (live or dark fiber) on ribbon fiber. One adapter head is for use on Bare Ribbon Fiber, and the other adapter head is for use on Jacketed Ribbon Fiber. The third interchangeable adapter head is for testing 3mm patch cords.

Rugged Metal Case
Field-proven lightweight rugged metal housing for years of heavy use.

Audible Tone
The unit provides an audible tone in the presence of a fiber optic signal.

Low Insertion Loss @ 1310 and 1550nm
The lowest insertion loss eliminates system interruptions.

LED Indication
LEDs indicate tone detection, Traffic presence, Traffic Direction, and Low Battery.

Hands-Free-Operation
With an easy to use thumb lock, hands-free operation can be enabled and disabled.

The Optical Fiber Identifier detects low-frequency tones at 270 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz. When traffic is present on the fiber under test, an audible tone can be heard as well as the traffic direction which is indicated by LEDs illuminating on the probe.

This unit can work with Wilcom's Model FS1316 and other light sources.

The Optical Fiber Identifier includes a carrying pouch containing three easy to use field interchangeable adapter heads to accommodate: one for bare ribbon fiber without a jacket, one for ribbon fiber with a jacket and one for 3mm jacketed fiber.

A 2mm optional adapter is also available for testing 2mm cables. It is not included in the standard package and needs to be ordered separately.

Hand-held ribbon fiber identifier F6121R

Operating Instructions

Introduction
The Wilcom Model F6121R Ribbon Fiber Identifier is a rugged, hand-held, easy-to-use maintenance and installation instrument that identifies optical fibers by detecting the optical signals that are transmitted through a ribbon fiber.
Check for signal presence before re-routing or maintenance, perform continuity tests and check cable labeling.
This ribbon fiber identifier uses a safe macrobending technique that does not disrupt traffic. At the same time, it avoids damaging or overstressing the fiber Thus, the probability of inter- rupting service is eliminated.

Signals that the F6121R detect include continuous signal optical transmis-sion, and low frequency modulated tones at 270, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Whenthe F6121R detects traffic on a fiber being tested, one of two Traffic LEDson the F6121R illuminates to indicate the presence and direction of trans-mission.
The presence of tone is indicated by illumination of one of threeTone LEDs (Figure 1). The F6121R also has an easy to use thumb lockfeature for hands-free operation

Operating the F6121R

Operation of the F6121R is simple, as outlined in the following steps:
1. Choose the correct adapter head for the type of ribbon fiber to betested. The F6121R is supplied with three adapters, each withindexing notch which is part of the ambient light reductiondesign as shown in Figure 2:
(A) deep-slot, for 3 mm jacketed fiber (i.e., pigtails and jumpers)or loose tube fiber.
(B) slotted, to accommodate jacketed ribbonfiber up to 12 count;
(C) shallow-slot, to accommodate bareribbon fiber up to 12 count;

2. Select the appropriate ribbon fiber adapter and slide it into themating slotted channel with slight downward pressure. Be sure toplace the adapter with the indexing notch facing the front of theF6121R as shown in Figure 3.

3. Insert the fiber to be tested between the adapter and the top of theclamp (refer to Figure 4). Slide the thumb switch fully upwardand ensure that the fiber is installed properly in the alignmentgroove.

4. For hands-free operation, slide the thumb switch upward and "rock"forward to lock, and the fiber will be held in place( refer to Figure 4 ) "rock" backward to unlock.

Presence of Traffic. Illumination of either Traffic LED indicatesthe detection and direction of traffic. This is useful in determiningwhether the fiber is transmitting or receiving at equipment terminallocations. The F6121R also provides an audible tone alert when traffic is detected.

Test Tone Detection. Illumination of any one of the2 kHz, 1 kHz, or 270 Hz LEDs indicates that a test tone is beingdetected, which ensures accurate identification of the fiber that isunder test.

The 2 kHz tone can be generated by a source such as as WilcomModels FS1316 (includes also 1kHz and 270 Hz), FS1317 (includesalso 1kHz and 270 Hz), and FS8514A (includes also 1kHz and 270Hz). The F6121R can be used with all three units, as shown in Fig-ure 5. The recommended wavelength is 1550nm for tone indentification.

During operation at the lowest levels of tone detection(approximately -40dB core power), the tone LEDs may flicker, which indicates that the minimum range for detection was reached.

Minimum Detector Sensitivity

Bare Ribbon Fiber: -40.0 dBm @1310nm typical
Adapter: -50.0 dBm @1550nm typical

Jacketed Ribbon Fiber: -30.0 dBm @1310nm typical
Adapter: -40.0 dBm @1550nm typical

3mm Adapter: -32.5 dBm @1310nm typical; -40.0 dBm @1550nm typical

Insertion Loss
Ribbon Adapters: Ribbon Adapters; < 2.00 db @1550nm typical
3mm Adapter: < 0.11 db @1310nm typical; < 0.80 db @1550nm typical

Self Test. Each time the thumb switch is operated, the F6121R performs a self test. When this occurs all LEDs will illuminate and then after approximately one-half second turn off.

Low Battery Indication. When the battery voltage becomes low, the "LOW BAT" LED illuminates. The unit will continue to operate for some time, but the battery should be replaced with a fresh 9-volt alkaline battery as soon as possible.

Battery Replacement. To replace battery hold probe in hand, and with thumb on grip, Replace battery. To re-install cover reverse the steps. Gently place cover on probe and align cover keys with probe keyways. Slide cover forward.

Maintenance. It is important that the optical ports remain clean and free of dust, dirt, grease, or other foreign matter.Cleaning with lint-free swabs and isopropyl alcohol is recommended for optimum performance.
